This engine took the auto world by storm. In it Carroll Shelby had what he always wanted, a lightweight, compact American V8 he could stuff in a lightweight European sports car that would knock the socks off all others in road racing. And that he did.

And Ford engineers proved they know what to do in making a no compromise high revving engine out of what initially was just an economical V8 designed to power its new intermediate Fairlane.

The engine even looks good aesthetically. From its humble beginnings as a 221-2V to its screaming power as a 289-4V, there was enough diversity to satisfy everyone. Without a doubt, it was one of Ford’s most successful engine.
